Neil Dempsey

Neil retired in June, 2016 after a career in education which involved classroom teaching, support positions, administration, and consultancy. He has given hundreds of workshops and inservices to teachers and administrators across the province and has twice been awarded the Excellence in Teaching Award from the University of Manitoba. Neil currently works with the 7 Oaks School division in a math advisory/ consulting r Neil retired in June, 2016 after a career in education which involved classroom teaching, support positions, administration, and consultancy. He has given hundreds of workshops and inservices to teachers and administrators ole in addition to teaching at the University of Winnipeg where he is also working on a PhD. For a number of years, Neil was the editor of Teaching Children Mathematics, a publication by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. His particular areas of interest are how children learn rational number, the education of pre-service teachers, and math anxiety.

Neil believes it is our collective mission to help students (and the public) move away from a narrow view of mathematics as a set of computational tasks and instead see the beauty and joy in the inter-connected web of ideas that is mathematics.
